- Every second, an animal dies for the fur industry –
The fur industry consists of cruel practices and it does not satisfy the regular requirements for animal welfare as the European
Commission ruled in a 2001 report.
In the fur farms, animals spend their lives imprisoned in tiny and dirty cages, in which they run up and down on account of nervous
tension and out of fear and boredom ; this causes, among other things, lesions, self-mutilations and cannibalism. The death rate of the
infant animals, due to a panicked reaction to humans, can reach up to 30%.
Methods of euthanasia (gas, anal electrocution, suffocation, poison, or asphyxiation) are intolerable if we consider the suffering
inflicted on the animal and the lack of a quick merciful death. Sometimes, the animals are only stunned and then skinned alive.
In nature, they are killed by traps which break their bones, lacerate their tissues or dislocate their joints. Their suffering can last
sometimes for several days.
Moreover, these traps also cripple and kill thousands of dogs, cats and other domestic animals who come upon them by error, and who
sometimes gnaw their own legs, trying to escape.
We, the undersigned, request consequently from the Government the total and immediate prohibition of
the production, the commercialization, and the importation of any fur into France.
